Frequently Asked Questions

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority is Immigration New Zealand’s digital pre-travel clearance. It’s recorded against your passport and verified by your airline or cruise operator before you’re allowed to board.

You’ll need one if your passport is from one of the 60 visa-waiver countries and territories — the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the Gulf states and every EU member state among them — or if you’re arriving by cruise ship, transiting through Auckland Airport, or you’re an Australian permanent resident travelling on a non-Australian passport.

New Zealand citizens and Australian citizens on an Australian passport don’t need one, and neither does anyone who already holds a valid New Zealand visa. Every traveller — including infants and children — needs their own approved NZeTA, linked to the passport they’ll be carrying.

No. An NZeTA is permission to travel to New Zealand, granted in advance to visa-waiver nationals. When you land, Immigration New Zealand grants you a visitor visa for that trip — up to three months, or six on a UK passport.

It doesn’t let you work, study for more than three months, or stay longer. For any of those you need the relevant visa before you travel, and an approved NZeTA isn’t a guarantee of entry: the final say rests with the immigration officer who meets you on arrival.

Ideally before you book, and certainly before you set off. Many approvals come through within hours, but a share of requests go for further review, and Immigration New Zealand says to allow up to 72 hours.

The decision comes to you by email. An approved NZeTA is linked to the passport on the request, so there’s nothing to print — keep the confirmation email on your phone for check-in. An approved NZeTA is good for two years, so applying months ahead is perfectly fine.

Two years from approval, or until the linked passport expires — whichever happens first. Within that window you can visit New Zealand as often as you like, staying up to three months each time (six on a UK passport), with a ceiling of six months in any twelve.

Because the NZeTA is bound to one passport, it can’t be moved to another. Lose, replace or renew your passport and you’ll need a new NZeTA before your next trip.

Yes. Transit passengers passing through Auckland Airport need an NZeTA (or a Transit Visa if their passport isn’t on the visa-waiver or transit-visa-waiver lists). It covers up to 24 hours airside; you must stay in the transit area.

Auckland is the only New Zealand airport with a transit zone, so a connection through Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown counts as a visit — answer ‘visiting’ on the request, not ‘transit’, or you may be refused boarding.

A Visitor Visa, applied for and approved before you travel. It allows stays of up to nine months and is the route for nationals of China, India, the Philippines, South Africa and every other country outside the waiver list.

We prepare the application, check your supporting documents — funds, onward travel, accommodation — and lodge it under our licensed immigration adviser. Only passing through Auckland? A Transit Visa may be enough; we’ll tell you which applies.

Yes. Beyond the NZeTA and Visitor Visa we handle the Accredited Employer Work Visa, Working Holiday and Post-Study Work visas, fee-paying Student Visas, partner and dependent-child visas, and residence through the Skilled Migrant Category and the Green List.

Immigration advice on these applications is given only by a New Zealand licensed immigration adviser, as the Immigration Advisers Licensing Act 2007 requires. Tell us your situation through the form and we’ll come back with the right pathway and a fixed quote.

No. Compass World LLC is an independent private company with no connection to, or endorsement from, the New Zealand Government, Immigration New Zealand or any immigration authority.

We provide an optional, paid assistance service — a guided form, verification checks, licensed immigration advice and human support. Every decision about your application and your entry to New Zealand is made solely by Immigration New Zealand. You can always apply directly at immigration.govt.nz instead.
